BEST almost nearly very close to being finished almost...

Long time no post...

So the film is almost done and like a bear that has been hibernating over winter I'm venturing out back into the non CG world again. With me though I'm bringing a mass of cool stuff from the production process to hopefully delight peoples eyes with!

original reference and concept model for the Best family living room. Note the sliding glass door... very important.

Animated still: The all important door looks pretty sweet in the shot and dispite the crazy render times definatley worth it. Also note the small matte painted light switch on the wall next to the door.

On the subject of matte paintings. It's not always light switches. Below is an example of a fairly extensive detail pass added via digital painting. Makes a good spot the difference. This process was used to address composition issues in shots and as a way to give an injection of detail into areas that were begging for it.

This was one of the heaveyer uses of matte painting. The exterior shot of the Manchester United stadium. Adding atmosphere was the key part of the task which is often where hand drawn techniques produce the goods compared to pure 3D in the same time span.

Welcome to the Extrodinary "Raindance 2010"

I worked up a concept for a film maker by the name of Jason Robbin's. The concept was for a microscopic robot sent to explore planet earth from somewhere far far away. The film is a 30 second short that has been entered into a competition and has been nominated a finalist so this is all good news! I believe part of the competition involves ratings based on the amount of youtube hits the films get so please visit the below link to see the film and help the cause.

New Concept Sketch

During one of the classes mentioned below we discussed concept sketches and this was kind of half created during that lesson. I quite liked the shape of the ship so I've since polished it up.

Illustration Classes

I've been teaching illustration classes at the beautiful setting of the Sir John Moore Foundation. Last week was out trial session and I'm really excited to say that the response has been amazing. We've been engaging all age groups all with varying areas of interest and ability.

We've got all the latest digital tools available for students to get to grips with including the latest photoshop suite Wacom graphics tablets and various 3D tools. As always though there is and will continue to be a big emphasis on traditional methods of creating illustrative works.

If you are interested in getting involved make sure to get in contact with the foundation's organiser here to discuss getting yourself or someone you know signed up for one of our workshops!

tweaking sir matt

There were a few bits i was not quite happy with. Having learned quite alot doing Ann I thought I'd quickly revisit him and tweak him up to the same level as her. I'm a lot happier with this now.

George's Mother

Second bought with Zbrush. This was more tricky than Busby, the features are quite unique on this lady so I had to pay serious attention to the photos I was using for reference. I apologise for the slew of eyeless and hairless faces btw.

Busby normal mapping in Zbrush

Busby is now officially looking kick ass! Got the highress version of the mesh looking spot on for the normal mapping to the lower res mesh once the head is animated. Next step is to get some sweet textures in here now.

I <3 Zbrush x

Matt Busby & Zbrush

Some kewl shots of the Matt Busby head sculpt in progress. The head sculpt has been created in Zbrush. I've just about got the lower sub-division sorted which just leaves me to ramp up the poly level and add in some wrinkles ready for the normal map. Ooo yeah and texturing.

Character design

I've been going through some chracter sketches for "BEST". There are a few characters that have no photgraphic reference to speak of for the film. The press has turned into a key factor in the script and have really become the bad guy of the whole show. I'm tired now and I need some sleep so I'll post the images and do that I think!

ooo one thing... as always the one I love the most is the one I initially disliked. The blond girlfriend, she looks well fit innit.

Anyway to find the page and the lovely site that is Kiwilicious then vist HERE for the feature.

I love this place and its crazy objects. I recently heard the newer satelite images have been purposely degrading the quality of the images from this area especially the "face" which is so distinct in these earlyer images (I believe from the Viking satelite..)

I need to get on some kind of project involving this place, not sure how to aproach it just yet though, be it what is there now (but unseen, wink wink) or as it may have been in the past.

Ah man it's done... So I'm sending it off now so they get it for good old Monday Morning, fingers crossed.

Everything is how I wanted it. The old guy worked great as did the smashed Holographic/LCD display. I think in terms of a concept there is deffinatley a solid offering here. I'd love to see this set in a game it would be pretty neato!

Gaming Concept

I've been working on a submission for Game developer who have given me a pretty groovy brief:
A middle management ransacked office from the near future. The manager has been killed when the place was raided and is left slumped in his chair. The offending bad guys were after information and the scene should show this. They didn’t come through the door opting for a more unusual method of entry and no body heard the attack as it is after office hours.

I'm loving the brief its right up my street, they said the future had to be very near so there was plenty of material recognizable to someone from today which instantly made me think of Children Of Men, so I sat down and watched that bloody masterpiece before I started.

I'm definitely happy with where its going colours are beginning to sit nicely and the window view over the city and hover cars has been a real triumph. I just need to ramp up the detail in the rest of the room and include my dead corporate. The big white screen will have a graph with tumbling share prices shown on it and loads of un-received messages awaiting my unfortunate soul who will soon be occupying the chair. A holographic display will also grace the man’s desk, along with some kind of data mainframe on the right hand side next to the door

Matte Painting

I've been working on a matte painting experiment for the film, I'm quite interested to see how projected paintings over 3D sets could look when you start adding lighting into the model and extra geometry not acounted for in the painting such as telephone cables and lamp posts etc... The base for the image is a 3D set created for the film of a terraced street, this way the image projection onto the mesh should be spot on. The model has been put together by Nixon Leung, you can check out Some more of Nixon's work at his website and blog here.

The image is still in progress right now but in terms of atmosphere I'm pretty much where I want to be with this before I pass it over to Wayne McCauslin for the animation work.

FC do B

Word on the street is that this Brazilian Sci Fi literature based publication is looking for an illustrator for their next issue. Said illustrator being yours truely, I'll post some details when I know more...

Set Concepts

I've started working with director Steven Spencer on his studio's (Nice Monster) new animated film expressing the ups and downs of football's first real superstar George Best. The project should be a real stunner looking forward to it being finished towards the end of 2010.
